Alagadi Beach

🏖️Alagadi Beach in Kyrenia consists of gorgeous wild flowers and soft clean sand. Nature photographers are guaranteed great shots of the white flowers growing there which are a protected species, so be careful. as there are big fines for picking them. If you want to see marine turtles this is definitely the place. The beach provides nesting for sea turtles, which is why it’s closed to visitors at night. But if you look up the Alagadi Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Centre, you may be able to join one of the groups that get to observe nesting.

🧭 Natural Beauty & Atmosphere
• The beach consists of two adjacent bays - one is more developed with a seasonal restaurant, and the other is quieter and ideal for those seeking solitude.
• Infrastructure is minimal. You'll find no facilities like electricity or changing rooms, and there are no sunbeds or umbrellas—though there is a generator-powered restaurant and paid toilets/showers near the busier bay.
• One of the beach’s most enchanting features is its natural “rock pools”, warmed by the Mediterranean sun—perfect for dipping your feet in while taking in the scenery.

🐢Wildlife & Turtle Conservation
• This beach is a critical nesting site for two endangered turtle species: the Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and the Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas).
• Nesting typically occurs from late May to early June, and hatchlings emerge after approximately 50–60 days, peaking between July and August.
• Conservation efforts are led by SPOT (Society for the Protection of Turtles), active since the early 1990s.
• They monitor nests, protect them with cages, tag turtles, and educate volunteers and visitors.
• To protect the turtles, the beach is closed at night during nesting season, and strict rules are enforced—no vehicle access, no fires, and reduced lighting to avoid disturbing hatchlings.

🧳Visitor Experiences & Activities
• You can book guided visits through SPOT, including night watches, nest excavations, and hatchling releases—all carried out under volunteer supervision.
• Booking is essential, especially for night watch experiences, and reservations typically open a month in advance. Expect to arrive at the conservation centre around 20:00. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory due to terrain conditions.
• Watching hatchlings emerge and make their way to the sea under red light is both educational and emotionally powerful.
• Visitors actively contribute through donations, helping fund volunteer patrols and site maintenance.
• Visitors should bring their own essentials like water, towels, shade accessories, and consider visiting on weekdays for a quieter experience.
• Swimming is generally safe, with gently sloping entry, but be aware of local currents.
• Most visitors speak highly of the experience:
“Stunning beach where sea turtles come to lay their eggs... We participated in the release of dozens of newborn sea turtles... Unique and wonderful experience for children too.”
