💧Water from Turkey – The Peace Water Project

📍In 2015, the Northern Cyprus Water Supply Project - often referred to as the Peace Water Project - connected Turkey to North Cyprus through an 80km undersea pipeline. This groundbreaking project delivers fresh water directly from southern Turkey’s Anamur River. It provides a significant share of the island’s drinking water and is a vital lifeline for the region and, potentially, eventually for the whole island.

📍Alakopru dam, built in Anamur in the Mersin province of Southern Türkiye, holds up to 4.61 billion cubic feet of water. The water is pumped 250m under the sea and ends up in the spectacular Gecitkoy Dam, which nestles behind the Besparmak hills close to Girne.

📍Dubbed “Peace Water” or in Turkish “Baris Su” – many experts hope the water can act as a catalyst for increasing co-operation between North and South Cyprus, as the South is urgently in need of a reliable supply of fresh water too.
