$60 Million Solar Power Plant Planned for Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus is set to take a major step toward energy independence with plans for a large-scale solar power plant worth approximately $60 million. The project, backed by a Turkey-based company, will involve the construction of a 50-megawatt solar power facility designed to significantly strengthen the country’s renewable energy capacity.

The investment is widely viewed as a strategic response to long-standing electricity supply challenges, helping to reduce pressure on existing infrastructure and deliver a more stable and reliable power supply. The benefits are expected to extend beyond households, with the industrial sector identified as a key beneficiary.

Solar Energy as a Practical Solution

Speaking on the issue, Olgun Amcaoğlu, Minister of Economy and Energy of the TRNC, confirmed that discussions are continuing with Turkey on several energy cooperation options, including the previously proposed submarine electricity cable project.

However, he stressed that under current conditions, the most realistic and effective solution lies in expanding domestic solar energy generation, supported by modern energy storage systems. This approach would allow Northern Cyprus to increase self-sufficiency while accelerating its transition to cleaner energy sources.

SANHO Project in Serhatköy

The solar power plant, known as the SANHO project, will be constructed in the Serhatköy area. In addition to electricity generation, the facility will include a 25-megawatt energy storage system, enabling surplus power to be stored and released when needed. This feature will help offset fluctuations in solar production and improve overall grid reliability.

According to **Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Industry Vice President Sercan Görgüner Bahçeci, the plant is scheduled to become operational in 2028. Once commissioned, it is expected to meet up to 60% of the electricity demand of the industrial sector.

Authorities in Northern Cyprus see the SANHO solar power plant as a key pillar in the shift toward green energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and imported energy. Beyond environmental benefits, the project is also expected to strengthen economic resilience, support industrial growth, and provide greater long-term energy security for the country.

If delivered on schedule, the development will mark one of the most significant renewable energy investments ever undertaken in Northern Cyprus.
