🧭 Crossing the Border: Visiting Northern Cyprus from the South
Planning to fly into the Republic of Cyprus and cross into the North? You’re not alone — many travellers land in Larnaca or Paphos and then head north across the border. It’s simple when you know how, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Here’s a complete guide to crossing the border from South to North Cyprus.
✈️ Why Fly Into the South?
There are no direct international flights to Northern Cyprus, due to its political status. As a result:
Larnaca Airport (LCA) and Paphos Airport (PFO) in the South are popular alternatives.
You can fly in directly from many European cities, including the UK.
From Larnaca, it’s about 50 minutes to the border and 1 hour 15 minutes to Kyrenia.
🚗 How to Cross the Border
There are several official border crossings, but the most commonly used for tourists is Metahan (Agios Dometios) in Nicosia. You can cross by:
Taxi from Larnaca or Nicosia
Rental car (with certain restrictions — more on this below)
Walking across in central Nicosia and getting a taxi on the other side
📄 What Documents Do I Need?
To cross from South to North, you’ll need:
A valid passport or EU/UK ID card
No visa is required for stays under 90 days
When entering the North, you’ll be given a white slip of paper instead of a passport stamp. Keep it safe, as it’s required when you leave.
🚙 Can I Take a Rental Car Across?
This is a common concern, and the answer depends on where you hire the car:
🚫 Southern Cyprus Hire:
Most southern rental companies do not allow you to take their cars across the border.
Even if they do, insurance won’t be valid unless you buy extra coverage at the crossing.
✅ Best Option:
Take a taxi to the border, cross on foot, and rent a car on the Northern side. This avoids all issues and is often cheaper.
🛂 Is the Border Crossing Easy?
Yes. For tourists, border crossings are usually:
Quick (often under 10 minutes)
Friendly and professional
Open 24/7 at major checkpoints
You simply show your ID, get your slip, and continue on your way.
💬 What About Customs and Restrictions?
There are limits on goods that can be brought across, especially alcohol, cigarettes, and electronics. Officials may do a quick bag check. Avoid transporting large items or bulk goods to prevent delays.
🗺️ Main Crossing Points
Here are the most commonly used checkpoints:
Name (South/North) | Type | Notes |
Agios Dometios / Metehan | Vehicle & pedestrian | Most used, in Nicosia |
Ledra Street / Lokmacı | Pedestrian only | Walk through central Nicosia |
Ayios Nikolaos / Strovilia | Vehicle only | Near Famagusta, used from Larnaca |
✅ In Summary
Crossing from South to North Cyprus is safe, legal, and easy for tourists.Just remember:
Bring your passport or ID
Don’t bring a southern rental car unless you’ve checked the insurance
Consider renting a car in the North or using taxis
Keep your entry slip safe
