Metehan Checkpoint Expansion

Cross-border travel between Northern and Southern Cyprus is set to become significantly smoother following confirmation that expansion works at the Metehan Checkpoint on the Turkish Cypriot side have now been completed.

Speaking on the issue, Tufan Erhürman confirmed that once the Greek Cypriot authorities complete their corresponding works, the checkpoint will operate with seven booths and increased staffing on each side. This upgrade is expected to substantially reduce long queues, particularly during peak travel periods.

New Road Permit Points at Key Crossings

Further improvements are also planned across other crossing points. By the end of the month, new road permit issuance points are expected to be introduced at both Bostancı and Derinya checkpoints. These additions aim to streamline administrative procedures for motorists and reduce delays when crossing the Green Line.

Proposal for New Checkpoints

Erhürman has once again reiterated calls for the simultaneous opening of several new checkpoints, including:

·         Haspolat

·         Akıncılar

·         Kiraciköy–Eglence route

If approved, these crossings would significantly simplify travel routes, particularly for those travelling between Larnaca and Lefkoşa, easing congestion at existing checkpoints and improving overall mobility across the island.

Concerns Over Green Line Trade Rules

While welcoming infrastructure improvements, Erhürman also raised concerns over proposals put forward by the Greek Cypriot side relating to the Green Line Regulation. He warned that abolishing VAT on goods originating from the south could create unfair competition, placing Northern Cyprus producers at a disadvantage in local markets.

What This Means for Travellers

If fully implemented, these developments would represent one of the most meaningful upgrades to cross-border travel in recent years, offering:

·         Shorter waiting times at Metehan

·         Faster vehicle processing at Bostancı and Derinya

·         New, more direct travel routes between major cities

·         Reduced congestion at existing checkpoints

Travellers, commuters, and businesses on both sides of the island stand to benefit from these long-awaited improvements starting with the Metehan Checkpoint expansion.
