Traffic Accidents in North Cyprus: 69 Cases Reported in Just One Week

The Northern Cyprus Police have released their latest weekly road safety report, revealing that between October 14 and 20, a total of 69 traffic accidents were recorded across the country — resulting in 30 people injured and an estimated 765,000 Turkish lira in property damage.

📊 Causes of the Accidents

The report breaks down the main causes behind these incidents, painting a clear picture of the ongoing challenges on the island’s roads:

  • Speeding: 19 accidents

  • Careless driving: 14 accidents

  • Insufficient following distance: 13 accidents

  • Improper maneuvering: 11 accidents

  • Failure to give way at intersections: 12 accidents

Speeding once again tops the list, highlighting a persistent problem despite repeated police warnings and public awareness campaigns.

📍 Where Did the Most Accidents Happen?

The majority of the week’s accidents were concentrated in the Lefkoşa district, followed closely by Girne and Gazimağusa:

District

Number of Accidents

Lefkoşa

25

Girne

20

Gazimağusa

12

Güzelyurt

7

İskele

5

Urban centers continue to see the highest rate of traffic collisions, especially in busy evening hours when congestion and poor visibility increase risks.

🚔 Police Inspections and Fines

In parallel with accident investigations, Northern Cyprus traffic police carried out large-scale road inspections during the same week.

  • 11,782 vehicles were stopped for checks.

  • 1,209 drivers were fined for various offenses, including speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and failing to wear seat belts.

Authorities confirmed that increased roadside checks will continue in the coming weeks, especially in high-risk areas and at night.

⚠️ Police Reminder: Stay Alert and Drive Responsibly

The Northern Cyprus Police once again urged all drivers to follow traffic laws, avoid distractions, and reduce speed, particularly during evening and nighttime hours when visibility is low.

Reckless behavior on the road not only endangers drivers themselves but also puts passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists at serious risk. With inspections continuing and penalties being strictly enforced, authorities hope to reduce the number of serious incidents across the island.

📝 Summary

  • Total accidents: 69

  • Injuries: 30

  • Damage: ₺2,765,000

  • Top cause: Speeding

  • Most affected district: Lefkoşa
