Traffic Offences Surge in Northern Cyprus

Criminal cases have almost doubled in the last 5 years in Northern Cyprus according to the latest court reports, increasing from 27,711 in 2020 to 54,592 in 2024.

Criminal cases by District were:
Lefkoşa — 20,059
Girne — 12,336
Famagusta — 11,305
Güzelyurt — 5,237
İskele — 4,329
Lefke — 1,326
A major part of the increase was due to traffic cases which rose from 23,506 in 2020 to 48,017 in 2024 (up 52%).
Sentences for traffic offences can be:
up to five years imprisonment;
up to 1 million Turkish liras;
or both.
Courts may also order compensation of up to 1 million liras to the victim.
