🧵  Lefkara Lace (Lefkaritika)

Lefkara Lace

Originating from the village of Pano Lefkara, Lefkara lace is a renowned form of embroidery dating back to at least the 14th century. Characterized by intricate geometric patterns, hemstitching, and needlepoint edgings, it is traditionally crafted in white, brown, or ecru colors. In 2009, Lefkara lace was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. 

🧶 Lapta Lace (Hesap İşi)

Also known as "Hasap Ishi," this unique Cypriot embroidery is predominantly practiced by Turkish Cypriots in the Lapithos region. Dating back to the 19th century, it features distinctive patterns created using a cross-stitch technique on linen fabric.

🧵 Silkworm Cocoon Embroidery (Koza İşi)

This delicate craft involves using silkworm cocoons to create intricate designs. The cocoons are cut and embroidered onto trays or fabrics, resulting in unique decorative pieces. 

🧺 Basket Weaving and Reed Crafts

Basketry is a traditional craft in Northern Cyprus, utilizing materials like reeds, straws, and branches from date trees. One distinctive item is the "sesta," a uniquely designed pan made from the stem of a particular kind of wheat. Additionally, chairs crafted from reeds and straws were once common household items, though this practice is now declining. 

🪑 Wood Carving

🧶 Hand-Woven Kilim Rugs

Kilim weaving is an ancient tradition in Northern Cyprus, especially prevalent in villages around Famagusta. These handwoven floor rugs are known for their vibrant colors and geometric patterns, making them both functional and artistic.
